Reading

"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift." - Kate DiCamillo

At Headcorn Primary School, we foster a vibrant reading culture built upon the foundation of high-quality texts and language, nurturing a genuine passion for reading in every child. We aspire to cultivate lifelong readers, arming them with essential skills such as understanding vocabulary, information retrieval, prediction, inference, explanation, and summarising. Our approach extends beyond the English curriculum, integrating reading across various subjects and daily classroom practise, to facilitate meaningful connections and deeper understanding. By instilling a solid foundation in reading, we empower our children to unlock the vast realms of knowledge and imagination within literature, enabling them to explore the world, both past and present, with curiosity and insight.

The Reading Hut

We are incredibly lucky here at Headcorn Primary School to have the most fabulous resource to support our reading journey: The Reading Hut. Thanks to fundraising efforts from our wonderful PTFA, we are thrilled to now have a space dedicated to fostering a love of reading and developing our school reading culture even further.

Reading Ambassadors

We have a team of dedicated UKS2 pupils who are our school Reading Ambassadors. They had to apply for the job, showing what skills and qualities they hold that would make them suitable for the role. Our fantastic team of pupils oversee the running of The Reading Hut, taking shifts at lunchtimes and helping pupils by recommending texts, reading together and generally keeping the space tidy, inviting and functional. They are also on hand to read with younger pupils across the school and it's delightful to witness this partnership in action!
