Modern Foreign Languages

“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things but learning another way to think about things.” Flora Lewis

At Headcorn School we believe that the learning of a modern foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore the differences and similarities between the foreign language (French, in our case) and English. Learning another language raises awareness of our multilingual and multicultural world and gives them an insight into their own culture and that of others. It also provides a medium for cross-curricular links and for reinforcement of the knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.

In KS2 we follow Language Angles, which enables children to progress in all aspects of language learning: oracy, literacy, intercultural understanding, and knowledge about language. We use a variety of techniques to encourage children to engage actively in their learning. These include rhymes, songs, games, using repetition and actions to help learn new vocabulary, and role-play. We emphasise listening, responding, and speaking skills along with simple reading and writing activities, aiming to make the learning of a new language as fun and enjoyable as possible.
